Rep. Andrew Fink has reintroduced a House resolution calling on Congress to end the federal student loan program.

“The current presidential administration irresponsibly seeks to place the burden of unpaid student loans on the American taxpayers, most of whom did not attend college,” Fink said. “Despite pushing this widely unpopular policy, they continue to issue more student loans.”

After already pausing student loan payments through last October, the Biden administration has resumed efforts to suspend or even permanently cancel loan repayments. Student loan debt has continued to rise dramatically since the representative introduced the same resolution two years ago. In the U.S., approximately 43 million borrowers owe more than $1.7 trillion in federal student loan debt.

The representative also expressed his concern with another obvious consequence of federal education subsidies: rising tuition costs. Tuition at American colleges and universities has more than doubled since 1980, impacting all students regardless of whether they take on loans.

“When even the biggest proponents of the federal student loan program admit that it’s creating a financial crisis, it should be apparent to our elected leaders in Washington that the country would be better off without it,” Fink said. “Congress must accept that the federal student loan program is now counterproductive and a disservice to all Americans.”

The measure is House Resolution 288.
