Representative will work with governor to deliver meaningful relief for Calhoun County, but says plan must go further
State Rep. Steve Frisbie (R-Pennfield) attended Michigan’s State of the State address on Wednesday, an annual event where the governor delivers an update to the Legislature and public about the status of issues facing the state and her proposed solutions.
A staunch advocate for Calhoun County families, Frisbie said Gov. Whitmer’s plans to address increased costs of living, particularly property taxes, are welcome but need to go farther.
“I was pleased to hear the governor recognize that property taxes must be reduced, but her plan is too small and targeted” he said. “We must take more meaningful steps to make the American Dream of homeownership more affordable in Michigan.”

Frisbie also said he was encouraged by the governor’s commitment to work across the aisle with House Speaker Matt Hall to remove barriers for more affordable housing, but said he hopes she will work with House Republicans to address rising energy costs as well – an issue she failed to mention in her address.
“Families are facing steep hikes to their energy bills but aren’t seeing improved reliability,” Frisbie said. We must ensure critical investment into nuclear power and repeal our state’s failing clean energy mandates.”
Frisbie was grateful to have Albion Mayor Victoria Garcia Snyder and Bishop Dr. Tino Smith as his guests for the governor’s speech. Calhoun County had strong representation at the speech, with other community leaders like Prosecutor David Gilbert, Sheriff Steve Hinkley, former Sheriff Matt Saxton, and County Commissioner Dominic Oo also in attendance.
