State Rep. Mike Harris, R-Waterford, who served 26 years in local law enforcement, on Monday issued the following statement after state police officers overwhelmingly expressed a lack of confidence in Col. James F. Grady II, the Department of State Police director, and Lt. Col. Aimee Brimacombe, the department’s chief deputy director:
“Michigan State Police troopers are fed up with the top brass. I’ve heard personally from many officers on the force. They’re frustrated that the director and other leadership seem to be looking out for themselves rather than supporting the men and women on the front lines. The survey makes it clear: This toxic culture is affecting the force all across the state.
“Brave state police officers put their lives on the line to keep our highways and communities safe. They deserve leaders who will have their backs. Instead, Col. Grady and Lt. Col Brimacombe have failed the troopers and the people they protect and serve. It’s time for the governor to intervene and restore integrity and purpose to the Michigan State Police.”
The Michigan State Police Troopers Association on Friday announced the results of a survey sent to its members. Of 1,185 responses, 98.48% said they did not have confidence in Grady and Brimacombe’s leadership.
Numerous controversies have emerged under Grady and Brimacombe. For example, a complaint filed in January alleged the pair awarded themselves improper bonuses. Brimacombe was also involved with a decision to settle a lawsuit against state troopers, even though she had a personal connection to the plaintiff’s family.
