LANSING, Mich. — State Rep. Steve Frisbie (R-Battle Creek) today commended the House Energy Committee for advancing his Natural Gas Protection Bill, House Bill 4486. The committee’s vote moves forward legislation that prohibits Michigan cities, townships, and counties from banning natural gas service or restricting natural gas infrastructure. The measure ensures that residents and businesses retain access to reliable and affordable energy.
“Michigan families should not face higher costs or lose access to the energy sources they depend on,” Frisbie said. “House Bill 4486 establishes a clear statewide standard that protects consumers and prevents a patchwork of costly regulations.”
Introduced on May 8, 2025, House Bill 4486 stops local units of government from enacting any of the following:
• Bans on natural gas usage in new or existing buildings
• Restrictions on installing natural gas piping or appliances
• Building codes mandating all-electric construction where natural gas is available
Frisbie pointed to recent actions in other states, where local gas bans have driven up heating costs and disrupted construction activity. He said Michigan should avoid those outcomes by maintaining a uniform statewide policy.
“Local bans create confusion and financial strain at a time when families are already struggling,” Frisbie said. “This legislation keeps energy affordable and ensures that residents have the options they need, especially during Michigan’s coldest months.”
House Bill 4486 now advances to the full House for further consideration. Frisbie and his colleagues are urging prompt passage so Michigan families and job providers can count on uninterrupted access to natural gas heading into winter.
